Netscape 8.1.3 has a feature that may cause some of the display elements to flash. You can rectify this by setting the browser to use the Internet Explorer's Rendering Engine as its Rendering Engine. This can be done by selecting View -> Rendering Engine -> Display Page Like Internet Explorer.

You can move maps by dragging them. They can also be moved by using the arrow icons in the top right corner of the maps. Maps can be moved in all directions using these arrows, not only the main cardinal directions. Maps can be zoomed in and out by using the slider switch* located on the right-hand side of the maps or the scale menu** located at the bottom. You can hide the menus by pressing the icon with upward- and downward-pointing arrows
. You can also re-display the menu by using the same icon.
The map background can be turned lighter by pressing the Fade Map button in order to highlight the selected destinations more effectively.

When a destination area is displayed on the map, further information on this destination can be obtained by once clicking on the destination using the left-hand mouse button. Consequently, the Destination Information window will open, featuring such information as the destination name and any restricted area data. If several overlapping destinations appear on the map, the Destination Information window will display information for all the destinations and an indication of how many overlapping destinations are featured. Retrieval of destination information may take a few seconds.
The Destination Information window will be displayed until you move your mouse outside the window area. You can lock the window in place by using your left-hand mouse button to click on the pin (
) icon on the right-hand corner on the Destination Information window's top bar. You can unlock the window by pressing the same pin (
) icon or close it by pressing the cross (
) icon in the top right-hand corner. You can open several Destination Information windows simultaneously.
Some destinations feature an Information on Destination link in the Destination Information window. When you click on this link, a new browser window will open on a Metsähallitus page comprising further information on the destination.

You can search destinations by category in the destination menu. Destinations are grouped in a tree menu.
You can display types of destination as well as the destinations by clicking on the plus symbols.
National park information is now shown.
You can hide the information sub-categories by clicking on the minus symbol.

When you select a destination, the map will be centered on this destination. Simultaneously, the map layer on which the destination appears and the restricted areas will be displayed.

When you enter a word or partial word in the name search field, a list of the destinations in which this string of characters appears will be displayed. This string need not appear at the beginning or end of a word; it can appear mid-word, as well. The search function requires that you enter at least three (3) characters.
Destinations were searched for, using the string "hel", which produced e.g. the city of Helsinki and the Helvetinjärvi National Park.
In addition to names, you can use destination codes to search for fishing and hunting areas (e.g. 5633 (Rahja)). The entire destination code must be entered.
If no destinations are found matching the searched word, the search field will turn red.

Destinations were searched using the character string "langelma", with which no destinations were found.
You can determine the categories in which a word is searched for.
Destinations are searched for using the character string "hel", with the search restricted to public waters as well as protected areas and hiking areas. Thus, the city of Helsinki is not displayed.
You can restrict the search to only the destinations appearing on the display.
Destinations will only be searched within the displayed area if you select "restrict search to display".
You can select destinations in the search hit list either by using a mouse or using the arrow keys to move over the desired destination and pressing Enter. When you select a destination, the map will be centred on this destination. Simultaneously, the map layers on which the destination appears and the related restricted areas will be displayed.

You can use the coordinate search in order to re-centre a map in accordance with the entered point. You can either enter a point complying with the KKJ Uniform Coordinate System or a point complying with the WGS84 Coordinate System. You can select the desired coordinate system by using the coordinate buttons. Points are entered as Cartesian, or rectangular, coordinates in the KKJ Uniform Coordinate System. In the WGS84 Coordinate System the coordinates can be entered as geographical coordinates in decimal degrees, degrees and minutes or degrees, minutes and seconds.

You can select which types of destinations are displayed on the map in the Map Layers list. The map layers form a tree menu. You can display more detailed destination information by clicking on the plus symbol. You can hide the information sub-categories by clicking on the minus symbol. When you select a higher map level, all sub-category map layers will be selected as well.

All fishing areas and small game hunting areas are selected.
You can delete all selected map layers by pressing the
icon.
You can change routes' display order by clicking on the
icon. The route layer selected as the uppermost layer can be displayed by pressing the
icon. By changing routes' display order, summer hiking routes can be traced over nature trails on the map.
If the Public Waters map layer is activated on a map, all the protected areas and hiking areas are switched on as well, since these layers feature many destinations and restricted areas within the same areas.

You can create a map page for printing by pressing the Print
button.
You can use the printing menu in order to select whether you wish to print a vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape) version of a page. Remember to adjust your printer settings accordingly when printing! You can also determine whether you want a separate page with information regarding the destinations on the map. Moreover, you can select whether an index view or map legend are included in the print-out. You can also name the print-out.
